She didn't know when the hands grew out of the darkness. First they were hers holding on to something that was crumbling inside.

Then the others came. Big. Pale. Greedy. They grabbed, they pulled, she was held.

The air thick with color, brushstrokes from an alien world. She saw through them, but not through herself.

And she looked up. Not because she was free, but because she remembered that the world could hold a hope. 

She saw. She dreamed. And that was enough to stay right there above the surface.
