Collection: Jaroslav Drazil

My work is deeply shaped by my own biography. I have a background in migration; my mother fled the former Czechoslovakia in the 1980s.

I spent parts of my own childhood in flight, including an extended period in a refugee camp in Austria. This early experience of movement, transition, and uncertainty forms the thematic core of my artistic practice.

Through painting, I explore the state of the 'in-between': arriving and moving on, belonging and estrangement, physical presence and inner distance.

Figurative, realistically rendered figures are placed within deliberately reduced, sketch-like pictorial spaces. Seating, waiting areas, and transitional zones become silent stages for the state of 'not-yet-arriving.'

My works are not autobiographical narratives in a narrow sense, but rather condensed images of collective experiences of migration, movement, and identity.
