At the end of my road, a path leads out to *Dybbøl Skanser. Here my route runs between trees, hills and old ruins. The area is both beautiful and dramatic. It is part of my DNA as a proud South Jutlandite.

One day I see the skans in a new light. Here my eye can run free. The windblown trees, the grassy hills, the bony ruins speak to me and breathe under my feet. The contrast is harsh. The rolling landscape collides with tons of heavy concrete.

The area balances between picturesque nature and gray giants that remind us of a time of war. It is precisely this contrast that strikes and inspires me. As if beauty stands more beautifully in the shadow of cruelty.

My motivation and my motif have moved home with my skans paintings under the title “Homegrown”. Here I know the light, the colors and the scents, so that is what I paint with.

 *Dybbøl Skanser: During the Three Years' War, the Dybbøl area became a battlefield due to the hilly terrain and the strategic location close to the island of Als, to which one could retreat if necessary. Source: Grænseforeningen.dk
