On Hasekura Tsunenaga's stay in France (1615):

“They never touched the food with their fingers, but used two small sticks that they held with three fingers.
They blew their noses on hand-sized soft tissue papers, which they never used twice, so they threw them on the ground after using them, and were glad to see our people around rushing to pick them up.
Their swords cut so much that they can cut soft paper by putting it on the edge and have the wind blow over them.”
