Ange Bell

Anges værker fokuserer på temaerne oprindelse og tilhørsforhold, og det er denne bekymring, der har dannet grundlaget for hendes praksis. Uanset om man samler og arbejder ud fra fundne fotografier eller, som i de seneste måneder, arbejder ud fra selfies taget af Instagram-brugere.

Gennem malerhandlingen genvinder og genopliver hun, med tilføjet varighed og betydning, et øjeblik tabt i det øjeblik, det indtraf. Inden for portrætterne er der et ekko af det, der er tabt og søgt, det taler til tider til vores følelse af nostalgi, og andre til vores ønske om at blive set, anerkendt og værdsat. Handlingen med at hente og genoplive er kernen i hendes praksis, fra indkøb af materiale til selve maleprocessen.

Ange laver detaljerede sturier i olie, og gennem en proces med at arbejde tilbage i overfladen og udforske markeringsteknikker, forvrænger, eliminerer og manipulerer hun billedet for at skabe et visuelt sprog. Hun sigter efter at skabe et portræt, der ikke kun fanger en lighed, men som også har en livlighed og dybde samt ønsket om at skabe et maleri, som beskueren kan etablere et kommunikationspunkt med. Ange søger ikke at diktere en bestemt betydning gennem den præsenterede fortælling, men snarere efter at skabe dialog mellem subjektet og beskueren.

Hendes arbejde er i private samlinger verden over og er blevet udvalgt til adskillige udstillinger, herunder Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Ulster Academy, og hun blev kortlistet for kunstnere og illustratorer Årets kunstner i både 2015 og 2016. Ange har vundet Royal Institute of Oil Painters Small Painting Prize, Jacksons Painting Prize Portrait-kategorien, Jacksons Painting Prize Tredjeplads og The Dry Red Press Award.
